These are the clearest photos yet of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz SL.

Following the Carparazzi pics snapped in July this year the latest photos show a car with less disguise, revealing pretty much the final shape and details, including headlight-grille configuration, roof and tail lights – and the rectangular dual tailpipes integrated into the lower bumper.

Among the main details not yet decipherable is the front quarter panel which is still covered to hide the starting point for the high waistline crease evident in the door and rear quarter panels – as well as what is sure to be SL-signature venting aft of the front wheel arches.

But it is clear Benz has equipped the SL with the same glass roof technology as the recenetly released SLK.

Now expected to be launched in mid 2012, with perhaps a peek at March's Geneva Motor Show, the next SL Benz is inline for 3.5-litre V6 and twin-turbo 4.6-litre V8 engines – with a 400kW twin turbo 5.5-litre V8 on the way for the SL63 AMG.

The car is also said to have been subjected to an extensive weight-loss programme. This should ensure a reduction in mass even though the car is larger and more accommodating than the current model.
