Mazda CX-5 (2012) first official pictures

This is the new Mazda CX-5, the third addition to the Japanese car company’s SUV line-up after the CX-7 and CX-9 (the latter isn’t sold in Europe). It’s a rival for the Freelander, Kuga and every other compact SUV out there, and will officially unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September.
What do we know about the new Mazda CX-5?

It’s the first production car to feature Mazda’s new Kodo design language, showcased by the Minagi (a thinly veiled concept of the CX-5) and Shinari show cars. Mazda has only released a few photos so far, but first impressions are of a good-looking little SUV.

It’s also the first production car to boast Mazda’s new SkyActiv Technology, a plethora of fuel saving advancements, from lightweight bodies and chassis, to new engines and gearboxes. When Mazda showcased its SkyActiv tech earlier this year it claimed the body-in-white was 30% more rigid but 8% lighter than before, and that the front and rear running gear assemblies weighed 14% less. There are new manual and automatic transmissions too, the latter claimed to weigh 16% less and improved fuel economy by 1% thanks to reduced frictional losses.

The engines are all-new too, a SkyActiv-G 2.0-litre petrol and a SkyActiv-D 2.2 diesel. The petrol engine has a high 14:1 compression ratio to improve fuel economy, and the diesel has a lower-than-average 14:1 compression ratio to reduce NOx. Because of the lower pressures the diesel's block is aluminium, saving 25kg and Mazda hopes that the ‘Standard Power’ version (in front-wheel drive guise, with the new manual ‘box and stop/start tech) will dip below 120g/km CO2 – there will also be a High Power version.

UK sales of the new Mazda CX-5 commence in early 2012.

Maserati GranTurismo S Auto Sport Pack (2011) news

First there was the Maserati GranTurismo, then the GranTurismo S, and mostly recently the track-hardened MC Stradale. But if your ideal big Italian GT sits somewhere between the GranTurismo S and MC Stradale then Maserati now has the car for you.
And this new Maserati GranTurismo model is...?

Well, it’s not so much a model as a tasty option for the UK’s best-selling Maserati model, the GranTurismo S Automatic. For £3840 you can spec the new Sport Pack, which ups to total cost of your new Maser to £92,480.

Above and beyond the existing 433bhp 4.7-litre V8 and six-speed ZF automatic gearbox from the GranTurismo S Automatic, the Sport Pack adds a tweaked exhaust system which keeps the trick bypass valves fully open when you select the Sport mode – all the better to hear that V8 bellow.

There’s new, faster MC Auto Shift software for the transmission, plus a host of styling upgrades: grey (or to be precise, Grigio Mercury Neptune-design) wheels, oval exhaust finishers, a little spoiler integrated into the boot lid, black-look headlights, black mesh side grilles, a black grille with a red-accents Trident logo, plus side skirts and new front winglets. The order books open in September 2011.

Ford to show four new cars at 2011 Frankfurt show

Ford will show off a new design concept car at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, it confirmed today.

It'll be one of 'four global product reveals... including a major new design concept and details of the next Focus performance car,' according to a brief statement released by the Blue Oval.
So what will Ford show at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show?

No word yet. It'll be a concept car, suggesting Ford is readying a new model or styling direction, rather than an all-new production car.

All we've seen so far is this rakish front end published on a media invite. Are those 'eyebrow' day-running lights? Or a new front-end style for future Fords? All will be revealed at Frankfurt.

But there will be road cars too, and we're expecting the final production Focus ST. Ford's already teased the car with 2010's Focus ST concept car so now it's time to deliver the real thing.

The Fiesta is also due an update, so we expect a facelifted Fiesta model line-up to be shown.
Remind me when the Frankfurt motor show is...

International media day kicks off on Tuesday 13 September 2011. CAR will be there mob-handed, so stay tuned in the coming weeks for all the previews, news and new launches lined up for the 2011 Frankfurt auto show.

Audi Urban Concept (2011) the first sketches

This… is a sketch. But it’s one of a series of sketches of Audi’s Urban Concept, a tiny little electric two-seat runabout that Ingolstadt will reveal at the upcoming 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September.
Is there room for two seats in the Audi Urban Concept? Or even room for the electric motor?

There are actually two electric ‘E-tron’ motors to provide the power, while a set of lithium-ion batteries should provide enough charge to buzz around big cities all day. There’s no word yet on whether they’re in-wheel motors but presumably there’s one powering each axle, and unless those side intakes are form winning out over function, the R8 supercar-alike gills will provide the necessary cooling.

Rather than anything as mundane as a set of doors, the Urban Concept has a sliding canopy that glides back to allow ingress and egress to the cabin. Seating is a staggered 1+1 arrangement, like on the Caparo T1, with the passenger sitting just off the driver’s right shoulder. They are two thinly padded seats, and only a skeletal cabin with a display screen mounted on the bar that forms the dashboard.
What else do we know?

Audi, with much pomp, claims the concept ‘confounds conventional car categories – the Audi Urban Concept combines elements of a racing car, a roadster, a fun car and an urban car into one radical new concept.’

More importantly, it shows that Audi is also exploring future urban mobility – BMW has the i3, both Mini and Smart have shown electric scooter concepts, and Renault will put the tandem-seat Twizy EV on sale in 2012.

The Urban Concept isn’t based on any existing car games, but uses Audi’s new lightweight Ultra philosophy to trim all unnecessary kilos – that means a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) cockpit which integrates into the base of the seats. Those wheels will add a few pounds of unsprung mass though, as they’re huge 21in items; Audi says the shrouds over the open wheels feature ‘blinking’ strips of LED lights.

The Audi Urban Concept will be revealed in full at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show in September.

Hyundai i30 (2012): the first official rendering

Hyundai will show its new i30 family hatch at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show. This first rendering show the new 2012 i30 for the first time - are we alone in detecting more than a hint of Vauxhall Astra in profile?

The i30 is Hyundai's Golf and Focus rival and is Hyundai's biggest selling model in Europe.
What's new for the 2012 Hyundai i30?

They're not about to mess with a winning formula. This first design rendering suggests the new i30 will continue where the old one left off: a neat, inoffensive, European flavour, matched by quality build and attractive pricing and equipment levels. Not to mention the longest warranty on offer in Europe.

Why so European? Because Hyundai - and Kia - realised that to compete properly in Europe, rather than peddle the Korean tat from the 1980s and 1990s, it had to sell cars aimed at the local market.

That's why the new Hyundai i30 - like the old one - is being engineered in Russelsheim, Germany (ironically, in the Astra's home town) and built in eastern Europe.
Hyundai i30: the look

The Koreans' 'fluidic sculpture' design language continues unabated. There's the usual piffle about 'flowing lines inspired by nature', but the latest iteration of the look is to pump up the hexagonal front grille and jewel-style headlamps.

Head of European design Thomas Bürkle said: 'The car is very close to the recently unveiled i40, and we want people to recognise the Hyundai design DNA on those two models.'
